Music video pitch write up

Production Hut

Around 6-8 weeks to complete the production. Around 3 weeks to film and the rest will be post production and editing.

Song choice: My song choice will either be: just can let her go by Rajiv Dhall, or jet life by Matt Easton. Both songs are upbeat and have a high tempo.

They are more aimed at younger teenagers aged 13-18 because these are the ages that generally listen to this style of music, however they are not just limited to these ages.

The effect will be low saturation and slow paced, this opposes the song because the song is a fast paced and upbeat I feel this will keep the viewer interested as it would not be what they were expecting from this type of music video.

The equipment needed will be a DSLR camera and a GO pro camera. The DSLR will be used for most of the shots while the GO pro will be used for some point of view shots and possible action shots. Using the DSLR will allow for good quality footage while also being quite versatile and allowing for a wide range of shots.

Fly High productions are a good competitive company that are good at all areas of productions and can be trusted to produce a good quality music video upon request, we produce professional quality music videos while also being able to enjoy the work.

While we will aim to get the desired effect in the shot during filming we can also get the effect in post-production as we have an expert team of editing and post-production effects so we get the desired effect for the customer.

audience theory uses and gratification

Uses and Gratification - uses and gratification theory states that every media must has to fulfil a purpose.
these are:

  • Identify - which is being able to recognise a product or person in front of you, such as role models that reflect similar values to you.
  • Educate - to acquire information, knowledge or understanding.
  • Entertainment - what you are consuming should give the audience a sense of enjoyment and a form of escapism from the real world.
  • social interaction - which is the ability for media products to produce a topic of conversation between people.
I hope that my music video fulfils the purpose of entertainment and that audiences can enjoy my music video and also escape from the real world and forget the problems of their days while watching my music video.

Hall reception theory

Hall reception theory focuses on the role of the audience when interpreting a media text, it states that audiences can interpret an identical media text completely differently from each other. this suggests that all media texts are polysemy which means that they have multiple meanings.
It says that the factors that can affect the way a media text is interpreted are:

  • Gender
  • Age
  • Class
  • Family
  • Self-image
  • Religion
  • Ethnicity
  • Location
  • Education
  • Nation
Audiences can take either a:
  • Dominant/preferred understanding - for my music video this would be the fact that i am having fun and enjoying myself, while also creating a bit of 'mick' take music video.
  • Oppositional meaning - this would be that the audience do not enjoy the music video i create and that they feel i am just copying someone else's ideas.
  • Or a negotiated meaning - this would be the audience enjoy my music video but they feel that my music video is not solely original.

Colleagues opinion of my song choice

I asked one of my colleagues to give me their opinion of the song I will be making a music video for.
He said that the song has a good narrative and story to it which can be used effectively to create an eye-catching music video which the audience would remember and also enjoy watching.

He also said that the song is upbeat so would have a wider appeal to audiences as more people would want to listen to it as it could put them in a good mood and make them feel good. He also added that to match the upbeat nature of the song the music video could be colourful so it gives the song and music video eye-catching features which the audience would enjoy to watch.

However they said that because the song is fast it will require practise for the lip syncing so it does not look unprofessional and amateurish. it would also require lots of quick cuts to match the pace of the music and if this is not done in the correct way then this can also look unprofessional.

textual analysis of Just cant let her go

This music video contains lots of colour which attracts the viewers eye.
It contains lots of jump cuts and fast paced shots which matches the music because it is fast paced and loud. In my opinion the target audience for this music video would be people aged between 12-18 because this age range is mostly likely to be able to associate themselves with the characters in the music video.
I think the director would want to the audience to be an active audience and enjoy watching the music video as he has included lots of bright and eye catching colours to try and keep the audiences attention.

It contains the male gaze theory, as in the music video lots of males are 'gazing' at the female character in a specific way, with the intent to have some relationship with the female character in the video.

The clothes the characters are wearing and the way they present themselves suggests that the main female character is based upon her looks and her ability to attract men, she does this with the clothes she wears; bright clothes which show off her looks and figure.

Where as the main male character looks to be based on his intellect and ability to do the right thing which helps other people, he is present as almost a hero in disguise as he is always protecting the girl and trying to ensure she is safe.

Music video target audience

My target audience will be people aged between 15-25 who enjoy listening to upbeat pop music.
They will be between this age because people around this age will be able to associate themselves with this song and the music video more that people above or below the estimated age range, however this is not limited at people above and below this age my still enjoy listening to the song as it is upbeat

Positives and negatives of working by myself

There are both positives and negatives of working by myself as opposed to working in a group.
One positive of working by myself if that i can work around myself and do not having to deal with the issues that surround other people having a busy schedule which means that it is easier for me to shoot my music video.
However a negative of this is that i have to deal with the full work load myself, which can mean added stress i am responsible for editing, shooting and everything else to do with my final production piece.

Another positive of working by myself if that there are no conflicting opinions within a group which can make it more difficult to move forward and create a final product that all members of the group are happy with.
However this also means that there is less constructive criticism of the work which means it is easier to make mistake that one person may not pickup on. i can get around this though my asking people for feedback on the video through final editing and asking them for ways in which i can improve my music video.

controversial music video

Filming group

In this project I will be working by myself, this may allow me to be more efficient because I will not have to work around other people, I can do all the work by myself and hopefully shoot within a shorter time scale.

Music video director

One famous Music video director is Hiro Murai.
He has directed music videos such as, Childish Gambino Sober and Flying Lotus never catch me featuring Kendrick Lamar.

Hiro Murai's background illustration and visual effects means his videos are full of incredibly subtle tricks, forcing the viewers eyes to looks at every inch of the screen.
his video for Flying lotus is as example that he doesn't need excessive special effects to create something that is still visually engaging.

Textual analysis of she doesnt mind

I will be analysing She doesn't mind by Sean Paul.
this music video shows men using women for personal gain and not giving anything in return.

One theory that can be applied to this music video is Hodge and Kress's theory which says genres control the behaviours of producers of such texts and the expectations of potential consumers.
This music video contains lots of good looking women to try and attract attention for, this can be linked with the male gaze theory as men would be more likely to watch this music video as there are attractive women for them too look at, the director may have done this to create an entertaining music video while also gaining more viewers for the video.

There is a use of bright colours which is what can be expected of a pop music video as a wide range of people watch these music videos so they have to be appealing to all people that watch them, the bright colours are for the younger generations and the story line for the music video is for the older generations that watch them.

Preliminary task song choice

For our preliminary task I have chosen to create a music video for a song called man down by the eden project. I have chosen this song as i feel it will be easier to create a music video for it and there has not been a music video created for this song so we cannot be accused of copying ideas from the original.

Textual analysis of the Thriller music video

The Michael Jackson Thriller music video is very long as there is a story being told within the music video.
The music video meets Goodwins characteristic of the demands of the record label as there are many close ups of Michael Jackson throughout the music video, this is because the company believe that Michael Jacksons looks are also a selling point, not just his music. Michael Jackson is also the main character within the story being told by the music video.

The music video also includes inter-textual reference as at the start of the music video there is a reference to a film, however this is not a true/ real life film so it may not be seen at complete intertextual reference.

in this Music video Michael Jackson is seen wearing one of his iconic colourful jackets which is part of Michael Jacksons Image.
